Pelvic organ prolapse and urinary tract function

Abstract
Pelvic organ prolapse is a process in which the pelvic contents, including the reproductive organ, bladder, rectum, and/or small intestines herniated through defects in the vaginal wall. Gynecologist are interested in the care of the patients with genital prolapse and urinary tract disorder because of the intimate interrelationship of these two organ system. Gynecologist must evaluate urinary tract function prior pelvic reconstructive surgery or continence surgery to prevent postoperative complication or surgical failure. To prevent progressing upper urinary tract damage by increasing postvoid residual volume, advanced pelvic organ prolapse must be corrected. Pessary should also be considered in patient with pelvic organ prolapse who has medical complication or declining operation.
A standardized terminology for pelvic organ prolapse has recently been adapted by the International Continence Society, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and the American Urogynecologic Society. A site specific standardization of terminology for the description of clinical pelvic anatomy is essential to allow meaningful comparision of intervention between clinicians.
